John French was born about 1796. He was the son of Henry French.

His second wife was Polly Mallory, the widow of Israel Perkins and daughter of Andrew Mallory and Mary Whitney. Polly was born about 1807 in Mallorytown.

Israel Perkins and Polly Mallory's children included:

Phoebe Perkins (1824, married William Bogart), and
Hiram L. Perkins (1829, married Amelia French daughter of John French).

John French and Polly Mallory's children included:

Henry French (1826),
Mary French,
Amelia French (1830), and
Frank French.

John French appeared on the census lists of Yonge Township, Leeds County Ontario in the 1840s.

The Battle of the Windmill was in November, 1838. Loyalists defeated an invasion attempt by Hunter Patriots, led by  Nils von Schoultz, who were attempting to overthrow British rule. The battle was at a windmill two miles east of Prescott.
